About this position
University of Turku is recruiting for a Doctoral researcher / Project Researcher in Soft Robotics within the Soft Robotics and Adaptive Systems research group (SOFTA lab) in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Technology.
The project is centered on metamaterial soft grippers for advanced robotic applications. The selected researcher will design and model soft, mechanically programmed structures, develop computational and CAD tools, and contribute to fabrication and testing using advanced manufacturing methods. The work is hands-on and interdisciplinary, connecting robotics, mechanical engineering, materials science, additive manufacturing, and finite element method (FEM) modelling.
The role is part of an upcoming Horizon Europe project and is based in the Automation Unit at the University of Turku. The position is full-time and fixed-term for 3 years. Planned start date is 1 September 2026 or by agreement, but no later than 1 November 2026.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree is required; applicants should have strong skills in mechanical design, 3D printing/additive manufacturing, modelling of compliant structures, and FEM tools. Excellent English writing and communication skills are required, together with the ability to work independently and in collaborative teams. The call also encourages candidates who are close to graduation; such candidates may initially be hired as Research Assistant for 6 months and upgraded after obtaining the degree.
Funding/salary: salary is approximately 2500–2700 €/month for a Doctoral/Project Researcher, or 2300–2400 €/month for a Research Assistant. No tuition waiver or scholarship programme is mentioned.
Application window: applications are open from 3 July 2026 to 10 August 2026, 16:00 (Europe/Helsinki). Apply via the University of Turku electronic application form and include the required documents: CV, degree diplomas, transcripts, motivation letter, and optionally recommendation letters, thesis, or relevant publications.
