About this position
The University of Akureyri in North Iceland is inviting applications for up to three funded 4-year PhD positions in an open call across several academic areas. These doctoral positions are designed for motivated candidates who want to pursue independent, high-quality research within a dynamic, internationally connected university environment.
PhD opportunities are available in social sciences (sociology, law, psychology), health sciences (nursing), education sciences (education studies), and business and natural sciences (natural resource sciences, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture science, business administration). Applicants are expected to develop a research proposal in collaboration with a prospective supervisor, and the university points candidates toward its research expertise and academic staff information for supervision matching.
The positions are fully funded and include a salary in accordance with Icelandic collective agreements. Successful doctoral candidates will be employed by the University of Akureyri for the duration of the programme and are expected to be based in Akureyri throughout their studies. The roles are structured as 75% research and 25% teaching, with teaching duties agreed upon with the relevant academic faculty after appointment.
Eligibility is broad but competitive: applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree with excellent academic results, show strong research potential, and have a clearly defined project that fits one of the listed fields. Excellent English is required, and candidates should be prepared to work both independently and collaboratively.
The application process has two stages. Stage 1 requires a short application outlining academic background and research interests, submitted through the specified Google Form. Before applying, candidates must identify and contact a prospective supervisor and obtain formal agreement to supervise. Stage 1 applications are due on 22 September 2026. Shortlisted candidates will later be invited to submit a full Stage 2 application, including a detailed research proposal and supporting documents; the Stage 2 deadline will be communicated separately.
The expected start date for successful applicants is February 2027. The University of Akureyri emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, societal impact, and strong links with industry, public institutions, and international partners. This is a strong opportunity for students seeking a funded doctorate in Iceland with close supervision and a flexible research topic within the advertised fields.
