About this position
UMC Utrecht is advertising a PhD candidate in stem cell modeling and neuro-epigenomics within the collaborative SETD1AB consortium linking UMC Utrecht and Erasmus MC. The project focuses on why disease-causing variants in the same gene can lead to very different clinical outcomes, especially in epilepsy and treatment responsiveness.
The PhD will work on human brain modeling using patient-stratified iPSC lines and innovative 3D “brain chimeroid” models, advanced neurophysiology with high-density 3D-MEAs, and multi-omic profiling including scRNA-seq and epigenomic assays. The role also includes data integration with clinical trajectories, in collaboration with data scientists and consortium experts.
This is a full-time PhD position based primarily at the Department of Translational Neuroscience, UMC Utrecht Brain Center, with occasional funded travel to Erasmus MC in Rotterdam for meetings and experiments. The environment is described as supportive, multidisciplinary, and well suited to candidates who want structured training in both wet-lab and computational methods.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, developmental biology, stem cell biology, bioinformatics, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Prior experience in cell culture, molecular biology, or data analysis is welcome, but the team emphasizes curiosity, collaboration, and willingness to learn over mastery of every technique. Professional English communication is required.
Funding: salary is €3,217–€4,077 gross per month (scale OIO), with an 8.3% year-end bonus, 8% holiday allowance, pension support, and public transport reimbursement.
Deadline: 14 August 2026.
Interested candidates should apply through the vacancy page and can contact Dr. Onur Başak or Dr. Noelia Antón-Bolaños for informal questions.
