About this position
Postdoc opportunity in Molecular and Translational Immunology at University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), Netherlands. This fully funded 36-month project investigates how targeting ERAP2 may selectively eliminate pathogenic EBV-infected B cells in multiple sclerosis (MS). The work is embedded in the Center for Translational Immunology (CTI) at UMC Utrecht and is carried out in close collaboration with the ErasMS team at Erasmus MC Rotterdam.
Research focus: molecular immunology, translational immunology, B cell biology, NK cell biology, CD8+ T cell cytotoxicity, human genetics, HLA-immunopeptidomics, single-cell transcriptomics, CRISPR-based cell editing, and population genetics/GWAS. The project will build disease-relevant cellular models of EBV-infected B cells, modulate ERAP2 activity, and study antigen presentation, immune recognition, and B cell survival.
What you will do: use functional genetics in primary human B cells and B cell lines (CRISPR-KO and knock-in base editing), perform immunological co-culture assays, analyze single-cell transcriptomics, and investigate HLA-immunopeptidomics to understand how ERAP2 variants and small-molecule modulators reshape the peptidome and immune responses.
Eligibility highlights: PhD required. The team seeks a highly motivated postdoc with experience or strong interest in molecular immunology, NK cell biology, and/or human genetics. Helpful experience includes CRISPR editing, co-culture assays, single-cell methods, immunopeptidomics, and population genetics. Strong English proficiency, communication skills, and organizational skills are required.
Funding and benefits: salary €3,724–€5,867 gross per month (scale 10), 8.3% year-end bonus, 8% holiday allowance, pension support, and travel reimbursement. The position is described as fully funded.
Application window: closes on 2026-08-21. Applicants should submit a short motivation letter, CV, and contact details for at least two references. Contact person: Dr. Jonas Kuiper (J.J.W.Kuiper@umcutrecht.nl).
