About this position
Deakin University is advertising a PhD opportunity for an Australian domestic applicant in a multidisciplinary project on driver fatigue, alertness, road safety, human factors, psychology, exercise science, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.
The project is led by Imali Hettiarachchi (Senior Research Fellow, Human Performance Modelling and Simulation, IISRI — Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation, Deakin University) with a collaborative team including David Broadbent, Michael Johnstone, Jamie Tait, Aden Kittel, and Xinjie DENG. The research builds on Deakin Science, Engineering and Built Environment GROW funding awarded to launch a pilot study investigating driver fatigue and recovery.
The study will examine the mechanisms underlying driver fatigue and recovery using behavioural and neurophysiological measures, with the aim of developing predictive models and evidence-based road safety interventions. The broader pilot work will evaluate whether a brief exercise intervention can restore alertness in fatigued drivers using advanced driving simulation and physiological monitoring.
Funding: The successful candidate will receive a full scholarship. The post does not mention a deadline or formal application portal.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should be Australian domestic candidates, ideally with an Honours or Master's background and interests in the listed fields. The opportunity is especially relevant to students interested in transport safety, human performance, and interdisciplinary research.
How to apply: Interested candidates should contact Imali Hettiarachchi directly at imali.hettiarachchi@deakin.edu.au for more information and to express interest.
