About this position

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France is offering a postdoctoral position on ID03 within the ERC Starting Grant project D-REX. The project focuses on multiscale modelling of deformation and recrystallisation structures, combining crystal plasticity finite element modelling (CPFEM) and phase-field (PF) modelling with advanced 3D experimental datasets.

The successful candidate will develop and calibrate CPFEM models to describe deformation microstructures and intragranular hardening, then build PF models of recrystallisation and grain growth using experimental parameters from D-REX. The simulated deformed microstructure will be used as the starting condition for annealing, and the models will be validated against ESRF data from dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM), diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), and 3DXRD.

This postdoctoral work is carried out in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), KU Leuven, and the University of Oxford. Responsibilities include creating reproducible workflows for comparing simulated and measured 3D orientation, misorientation, and strain fields; publishing results; presenting at international conferences; and releasing modelling and comparison pipelines as documented open-source software.

Applicants should hold a PhD in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or a related field awarded within the last 3 years. Strong experience in CPFEM and/or phase-field modelling is expected, together with a solid grounding in physical metallurgy, Python/MATLAB programming, and HPC simulation workflows. Experience with 3D characterisation methods such as DFXM, DCT, 3DXRD, or EBSD is welcome but not mandatory. The ESRF values collaborative, international working environments and offers competitive compensation, allowances, and relocation support.
