About this position
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the ID03/XIM beamline within the ERC Starting Grant project D-REX.
The project focuses on multiscale modelling of deformation and recrystallisation structures in materials, combining crystal plasticity finite element modelling (CPFEM) for the deformed state with phase field (PF) modelling for recrystallisation and grain growth. The predicted deformed microstructure will be used as the initial condition for annealing simulations.
The work will be validated against 3D experimental datasets generated at the ESRF, including dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM), diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), and 3DXRD. The postdoc will develop and calibrate models, compare simulation outputs with measured 3D orientation, misorientation, and strain fields, and build reproducible analysis workflows.
This is a collaborative, international project involving the ESRF, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), KU Leuven, and the University of Oxford. The successful candidate is expected to publish results, present at conferences, and release modelling and comparison pipelines as documented open-source software.
Applicants should hold a recent PhD in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or a related discipline. Strong experience in CPFEM and/or phase-field modelling, a background in physical metallurgy, programming in Python/MATLAB, and experience with HPC simulations are key strengths. Familiarity with 3D characterization techniques is advantageous but not mandatory. English proficiency is required, as it is the working language at the ESRF.
The appointment is for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal for a further 6 to 18 months. ESRF offers an international research environment in Grenoble, competitive compensation and allowances, and relocation support. Applications must be submitted online before 28 August 2026.

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
